Nieuwstadt is de alias van singer-songwriter Geert Laenens. Nederlandstalige indiepop songs, met een vleugje kleinkunst en melodieën die rondjes draaien in je hoofd. En vooral: een erg bijzondere stem die je doorheen verhalen over leven en liefde gidst. Nieuwstadt zag in 2022 het levenslicht en schopte het in datzelfde jaar tot finalist van de Nekka-wedstrijd. Sindsdien bouwt Nieuwstadt aan iets dat blijft. Zonder shortcuts of hypes. Dat leverde uiteenlopende podia op, van Suikerrock tot de huiskamer van Herman Van Veen, van Zuiderzinnen tot het Vlaams Parlement, van de nationale feestdag van België tot de Vlaamse feestdag en festivalspots tussen Camille en Mama’s Jasje.

De recente single "Gelukkig ben ik" vond zijn weg naar Radio 1 en zo timmert Nieuwstadt gestaag verder aan de weg naar een plekje aan het Nederlandstalige muziekfirmament. Laenens is niet aan zijn proefstuk toe. Al twee decennia baant hij zich, in verschillende gedaantes (Newtown, Renton Jules en nu dus Nieuwstadt) een weg in de schaduw van de muziekscene met zijn typerend stemgeluid en zijn groot talent voor kleine liedjes. In 2020 bracht hij met zijn Engelstalige indierock band Renton Jules de plaat 'A Little Souvenir' uit.

This approach has led to an impressive and diverse list of stages: from Suikerrock to Herman Van Veen’s living room, from Zuiderzinnen to the Flemish Parliament, from Belgium’s National Day to the Flemish Holiday, and festival lineups that placed him between artists like Camille and Mama’s Jasje.

Nieuwstadt’s recent single “Gelukkig ben ik” gained airplay on Radio 1 (prime radio station in Belgium) and further solidified his position as an emerging voice within the Dutch-language music landscape. Geert Laenens is no stranger to the music world. For over two decades he has navigated the scene under several monikers—Newtown, Renton Jules, and now Nieuwstadt—always recognizable by his unique vocal timbre and talent for crafting small, emotionally resonant songs.

In 2020, he released A Little Souvenir with his English-language indie rock band Renton Jules.
