Modern jazz with influences from classical and oriental music, Micro Oxygen truly brings a unique mix of styles to the table. Under the direction of Pian Vane, a Cantonese pianist and composer, beautiful narrative compositions are made that you can easily be drawn into.

The word “narrative” is meant in a very literal sense here. This can be clarified in the band’s distinctive composing process. Each song is based on a story. The story is created first and from here a composition emerges. This results in a style that feels very much like a cinema for your ears. Each song tells a story about a moment, a dream, or a life experience.

The distinct sound of Micro Oxygen is influenced by the colorful modern jazz sound of Aaron Parks and Brad Mehldau, but Pian’s cultural background and her interest in romantic composers like Chopin have had a big influence as well. Alto saxophonist Gregor Oehlmann, bassist Wolf van Gemert and drummer Joey Schins each bring their own touch to the music.

As an emerging modern jazz quartet, Micro Oxygen quickly became a visible contribution to the live music scene in the region. From competitions to jazz festivals, presenting their music at culture venues all the way to playing at Jazzout Fest Limburg (sharing stage with Cory Wong and Gallowstreet), Chique Festival, Kiosk Concerten Festival, JazzContest Mechelen, Jazz Shanghai, Les Temps Mêlés and continues to grow a fanbase with their live performances.
