Erik Van Hoof studied classical double bass and started his musical career as a bass player in various blues and (hard) rock bands in Mechelen. Over the years he got tired of playing covers and founded the prog-rock band “Soulivian” together with a few other musicians. He gave up the bass and switched to guitar. From then on he wanted to concentrate on composing his own songs.
A few years before, Peter Vrancx, had co-founded "Between Worlds". He wrote the vocal lines and lyrics for this metal band, which in 2010 released a full album "Intrusions". The album received very good comments from a number of magazines and on-line reviewers. After the split of this band, he joined Eriks band Soulivian.
Due to the complexity of the songs and the accompanying slowness of the writing process, a certain tiredness and frustration arose. With an EP “Constellations” in the fall of 2016 and a few concerts that left the audience surprised, the Soulivian project ended in disappointment.
Determined to write more accessible songs with a new band, 3 ex members of Soulivian - Erik, Peter and Geert Feyaerts (bass) - relaunched to the Coinmen project in 2018.
Drummer Bert De Rijck and guitarist Regi Gysemans joined the band in the fall of 2018. Bert had already earned his spurs in the music scene of Heist op den Berg playing with a number of bands during the post-punk period. He later played the drums for "The Good Sons". He regularly appeared as a session musician for percussion and drum in various projects.
Since his youth, Regi has been active in various rock & blues bands where he mainly focused on the work of his guitar idols. Writing his own songs was a new experience for him, but it soon turned out to be no problem. He too got a taste for song writing.
At the beginning of 2019, Coinmen unexpectedly had to look out for a new bass player.
Jo Vandenhouten turned out to be the perfect candidate after a few auditions. Although his main instrument is unquestionably the bass, he also masters the guitar, piano percussion and drum. He has earned his spurs in various bands in Leuven.
Thanks to his melodic bass playing, Jo provides great added value while working out the songs.
Coinmen evolved to its current sound in this line-up. The influences from the rocking 70s are recognizable, but Coinmen manages to create original songs with attention to arrangements, musicality and content.
Coinmen was ready for recording after the summer of 2019. A few performances were completed with a fully-fledged live set. In 2019, "Wasting Daylight", the first full album, was born. The album was recorded live at Fandango studios and released on the indieplant label.
This album will now try to find its way in 2020.
