Casimir Liberski
Pianist, composer, arranger, and keyboardist.
Bio
Casimir Liberski was born in Brussels in 1988, committing himself to music at a very young age. After receiving his first piano at the age of 5, he immediately became immersed in the study of the instrument. Very quickly, he learned to transcribe the pieces he liked by ear before starting to arrange his own compositions. As soon as the opportunity arose, he started playing with other musicians, forming his first trio in 2002 at the age of 14. While he attended both jazz and classical piano lessons, it was as a relentless self-taught musician that he started paving his own way, starting a career as a pianist while still attending school. In 2004, he was awarded an "Octave de la Musique, Révélation 2003-2004" while composing the original soundtrack for his father Stefan Liberski's first feature film Bunker Paradise that same year. In 2006, he won the competition for young jazz musicians organized by the commune of Ixelles as well as Les Lundis d'Hortense at the Brussels Jazz Marathon, together with the audience prize and Best Soloist. In 2006, the Belgian Spes Foundation, which has been supporting artists for more than 20 years, granted him a scholarship to follow the teachings of some of New York's great masters of jazz, such as Ornette Coleman with whom he forms an almost filial bond. This unusual and genre-bending artist will pass on a true philosophy to the young musician, nourishing a free-thinking, cross-cutting and alert sensitivity to the spirit of the times. Brilliant transgressions with a light touch and sense of humor are all part of his precious legacy. At the age of 18, Casimir Liberski went to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, thanks to the exceptional "Presidential Scholarship" grant. His study cycle ending in May 2010, Casimir Liberski will go on to live in New York City, where he becomes involved with musicians such as Brad Mehldau, Masabumi Kikuchi, Danilo Perez, Craig Taborn, Jason Moran and expands his playing. He collaborated with Charnett Moffett, Stanley Jordan, Rodney Holmes, Denardo Coleman, Jeff Tain Watts and many others on various records and tours. Casimir Liberski released several records under his own name and on his own independent label Dalang! Records. He wrote the original soundtrack for the film Tokyo Fiancée in 2014 and won the solo piano competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2016.
In 2019, he released Cosmic Liberty (Ropeadope Records USA), considered his major effort to date. The album was recorded in New York alongside top drumming star Matt Garstka and the exceptional bassist-composer Louis de Mieulle. Casimir Liberski currently resides in Brussels where he works and performs regularly with his original trio, formed of Janos Bruneel on double bass and Jérôme Colleyn on drums, as well as his electronic pop band Maniac Maison which he founded with his wife Shoko Igarashi and his long-time friend Lucien Fraipont (Robbing Millions).Video’s
