Het Frans-Belgische duo Bipolar Bows ontstond uit een studieproject van cellist Toby Kuhn en violiste Lotte Remmen, maar ontgroeide al snel die eerste fase. Ze leerden elkaar kennen in Slovenië, toen Toby de bassiste verving van Lotte’s band Old Salt. Al gauw resulteerde deze ontmoeting in eindeloze jam- en oefensessies en besloten ze een vast duo te vormen. In Bipolar Bows gaan Lotte en Toby de uitdaging aan om zoveel mogelijk muziekstijlen en nieuwe technieken te ontdekken en naar hun strijkershand te zetten.

Begin 2019 besloten ze om hun werk naar het podium te brengen. Wie het geluk had dit duo al eens aan het werk te zien, wist het meteen: dit is te mooi en te waardevol om binnenskamers te blijven. Het werd een mozaïek van klassiek en traditional, jazz, blues en funk, van Balkan tot Appalachia Folk, doorspekt met improvisaties uit de diepste hoeken van hun creatieve zielen.

In december 2020 brachten ze in eigen beheer hun debuutalbum ‘Krun?hug’ uit. In februari 2021 werden zij winnaar van de eerste Flanders Folk Awards in de categorie ‘beloftevolle band’.

The Franco-Belgian duo Bipolar Bows was born from a study project between cellist Toby Kuhn and violinist Lotte Remmen which outgrew its first purpose to grow in to something more than the sum of its parts. They first met in 2016 in Slovenia when Toby jumped in as a bassist for Lotte's band Old Salt; many jams and practice-sessions later they were a duo. Bipolar Bows gave the pair an outlet for the explorations of styles, traditions and techniques and adapting them to their instruments. In 2019, after much urging from friends and peers, they decided to bring their work to the stage and share beauty and delight with their public, a mosaic of music ranging from classical to traditional, to jazz, blues or funk, from the Balkans to Appalachia, always highlighting improvisations from the deepest corners of their brains.

Bipolar Bows has performed around Belgium since its debut in the 2019 Fiddlers on the Move festival (Gent), and further abroad in the Kav? and Floating Castle festivals in Slovenia, live on Bulgarian radio, or at the Umefolk festival in Sweden (2020).

In December 2020 they released their debut album ‘Krun?hug’. In February 2021, they won the first Flanders Folk Awards in the category of 'Most Promising Band'.
