Bio
Ben Salter is an Australian songwriter and performer, based in the southern state of Tasmania. He has toured Australia and the world for nearly 20 years, both solo and as a member of The Wilson Pickers, The Gin Club, Giants of Science and Hownowmer. However his solo work remains his main priority.
Ben’s distinctive, emotive voice is regularly cited as the one of the best in Australia. His performances highlight his storytelling, humour and sincerity, while his recordings experiment with a diversity of styles from acoustic ballads to indie rock, avant garde soundscapes to instrumentals. His idiosyncratic and literary style is in the tradition of songwriters John Cale, Robert Wyatt and David Byrne, and he draws inspiration from the likes of The Velvet Underground, Roy Orbison, The Ink Spots and Low.
Ben has performed at most of Australia's biggest festivals including The Big Day Out, Bluesfest, The Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Festival, Splendour in the Grass & Dashville Skyline. He has also performed three times at the Binic Festival in Bretagne, France, as well as Musexpo in Los Angeles and Canadian Music Week in Toronto.
Ben has written and performed for highly successful productions and events, with lauded contributions to the convict tales of Vandemonian Lags, collaborations for TEDx, and regular performances for Australian broadcasters, including TV favourite RockWiz (alongside pop superstar Kimbra). He counts among his collaborators some of the industry’s most respected names, such as Gareth Liddiard (The Drones, TFS), Marlon Williams, Mick Thomas (Weddings, Parties, Anything), Tim Rogers (The Bamboos, You Am I), Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger), and London-based producer Aaron Cupples (Kirin J Callinan, The Drones, J Spaceman). He has toured with Cat Power, J Mascis, Counting Crows, Iron & Wine, Robert Scott (The Clean, The Bats), Built To Spill, and many others.
Ben is currently undertaking a mammoth six month tour of Japan, the UK and Europe that is sure to send him insane, broke or both.
