Bio

Anaphora

Anaphora was created back in 2018 out of a fortuitous encounter of the three musicians – Filippo Deorsola, Jonathan Ho-Chin Kiat and Ap Verhoeven – during a last-minute jam session at CODARTS, the conservatoire where they all studied at the time.

Meeting ‘by chance’ through improvisation was in fact no coincidence at all : over its four years of existence, the band has built its specific, colourful sound around playful explorations of improvisation as a tool of musical research and an essential method of building bridges through musical differences and beyond them.

From the classic song-forms to non-idiomatic improvisation, from contemporary classical music to raw evocations of the Blues permeating Jazz and its history, with Anaphora one can only expect the unexpected.

That is the beauty of improvisation that Anaphora wants to share with the public every time they play. At its deepest, improvisational practice signifies two of the most fundamental human traits: the need to communicate – form meaning – in this world, and the miraculous power that comes from human resourcefulness in face of the unexpected.

Anaphora + Unit

Anaphora + Unit is a new project taking improvisation as its topography of action. The Anaphora organism expands. New sonic flows organised between the trio and the Trumpet, Flute, Violin , Guitar and Cello. New possibilities of interactions between sounds and bodies.

Anaphora + Unit is an improvisative community of Bodies whose focus is the research of timbrical and dynamic possibilities within the unusual line up. The mixed background of contemporary classical and Jazz enables the band to create new shapes, colours and sounds within their interplay.

BandLeader Personal Biography:

Filippo Deorsola (1997) is a Belgian Italian Pianist born and bred in the European Capital, Bruxelles. Graduating ‘Cum Laude’ from CODARTS in 2021, He heads Anaphora, which has released its debut album Lexicon I under the Italian Label Auand with support from Dutch Cultural Organisation SENA.

His practice is distinctly multi-disciplinary. He has presented his Bachelor Thesis research into Improvisation at “[e]motion: Graduate Conference on the Arts and Technology” in Porto at the Universidade Cato?lica Portuguesa. In 2020, He founded the M.A.D. Collective (Mutually Assured Deconstruction), a space where Visual Artists, Authors, Performers and Academics come together to think of new ways of inquiry into the events and things around us.

He has received a composition commission from the l’Orchestre National du Jazz ( FR) in February 2022, having the opportunity to compose for two weeks under Ste?phane Payen’s and Fre?de?ric Maurin’s guidance . The resulting work – Da Lontano C’era un’Isola (for Piano, Trumpet, Flute, Violin, Cello) was premiered by members of the youth Orchestra of the O.N.J.

The silver lining throughout Filippo’s work is his inextinguishable interest with improvisation, whether musical or otherwise. Improvisation, he believes, has the power to communicate beyond our differences. By working ‘by default’ with the unexpected, Improvisation is a highly dynamic force that can lead to radical new ways of thinking Music, Art and other Socio-Cultural possibilities around us.
