The Stordiau Revolution is the artistic project of Belgian musician, composer, producer, and sound designer Alexander Stordiau — a prolific and quietly visionary figure in the world of European underground electronic music. Based in Brussels, Belgium, where he maintains his music studio, Stordiau has built an artistic identity that is best described as subtle, trippy, melodic, instrumental, and electronic.  Over the course of more than two decades, he has carved out a distinctive niche at the intersection of ambient, trance, and experimental electronica — one that is deeply personal, emotionally textured, and defiantly independent.

Early Life and Classical Training

Alexander Stordiau’s relationship with music began early and formally. He had his musical education starting at age 11 at the music academies of Roeselare, Kortrijk, Brugge, Aalst, and Gent in Belgium.  He followed lessons in violin, piano, vocal training, harmony, and music history across these institutions, giving him an extended and thorough musical training.  He is a violinist and pianist with a classical education, and in formal musical life he was a member of several bands and did a great deal of live performance — experience that would remain foundational to his later work. 

This classical grounding proved to be a crucial counterbalance to his eventual turn toward electronics. The discipline of harmony, the expressiveness of the violin, and the structural thinking instilled by years of conservatory-style training would all leave their mark on the intricate, melodically intelligent compositions he would later create under The Stordiau Revolution banner.

The Turn to Electronic Music

In the years following his classical and live performance career, Stordiau made the transition that would define his mature artistic identity. In the last decade or so, he specialized in using music programs to create his electronic compositions.  He became familiar with software such as Propellerhead Reason, which proved a rewarding addition that allows him unlimited musical experimentation. 

His music can be associated with experimental electro-ambient and trance fusion, drawing influence from Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, and Air.  These are not incidental references — they speak to Stordiau’s deep immersion in the tradition of European cosmic and ambient electronics, a lineage that prizes atmosphere, patience, and emotional depth over commercial accessibility. The result is music that rewards attentive listening: intricate sonic environments that unfold slowly, layering textures and rhythmic pulses into something greater than the sum of its parts.

Alex Nielsen of Bearsuit Records in Edinburgh described the work with enthusiasm, noting how it feels rooted in the grand tradition of European electronic music, with some pieces nodding toward Kraftwerk in particular, and others capturing the feel of Bowie’s Berlin period — specifically the Low era. 

Collaborations and Label Partnerships

Stordiau has never been content to work in total isolation. Over the years, he has cultivated a series of meaningful collaborations that have expanded and enriched his output.

He works now and then with Mr. Lee Williams from Bristol, UK, who provides guitar, bass, and/or drum tracks.  This transatlantic creative exchange adds an organic, live-instrument texture to some of his otherwise synth-driven work.

Stordiau has also worked with Bearsuit artists, including Harold Nono, under the project name The Original Magnetic Light Parade.  His relationship with Bearsuit Records — the Edinburgh-based experimental label — has been particularly meaningful. He contributed to the 2017 Bearsuit compilation The Invisible & Divided Sea,  which served as an introduction for many listeners to his particular brand of atmospheric electronica.

More recently, he has begun collaborating with light artist Tom Lagast under the combined name ALTOON⟁, a project that intersects his musical world with visual art and light installation. 

On the label front, Stordiau has released his own work via international labels in Japan, Italy, and Hungary,  reflecting the genuinely global reach of his music despite its underground profile. In late July 2019, he signed to Pure Spark Records, a Tokyo-based label,  a relationship that signaled his growing recognition beyond the European experimental scene.

Discography Highlights

2019 — Poking Your Imagination (Pure Spark Records)

Released on September 30, 2019, Poking Your Imagination is a 10-track album produced, written, and recorded entirely by Alexander Stordiau, mastered by A.Fruit, with artwork by uno and mixing by Ippu Mitsui.  The album includes tracks such as “In The Tepid Shine,” “Whispering Trees,” “What We Leave Behind,” and “Hanging Upside Down.” Stordiau himself has reflected that during composition, he is often astonished by how music itself sometimes forces him in unexpected directions — as if the laws of the universe take over.  This sense of music as an autonomous force is palpable throughout the album.

2024 — Skin of Salt EP

Released on April 5, 2024, Skin of Salt is a 4-track EP running approximately 22 minutes.  It continues the trippy, gurgling electronic soundscapes that Stordiau has perfected over the past two decades.  The hyperkinetic “Fear Merges Easily” is appropriately eerie, yet somehow soothingly melodic, while the 11-minute centrepiece “Hearing The House Breathing” is even more ominous — self-described as a sort of ghost story of experiencing the sounds of an empty house as a deceased mother continues to perform her daily chores. 

2024 — I Did Not Flinch EP

Released on June 21, 2024,  this EP continued his prolific 2024 output, exploring new sonic terrain while maintaining his signature atmospheric depth.

2024 — Conceiling the Day EP

Released on September 20, 2024, Conceiling the Day is a 5-track EP  that further demonstrated his commitment to a steady, exploratory release schedule.

2024 — Marmelade Sky and related tracks

November 2024 saw the release of dance/electronic material including “Marmelade Sky,” alongside tracks such as “Hunch,” “Black Stars,” and “Going Out the Way You Came In.” 

2025 — Killed A Sacred Cow EP

Released on October 17, 2025, Killed A Sacred Cow is his most recent EP, available on most streaming platforms in digital format. 

Live Performance and Immersive Experiences

Despite his studio-centric practice, Stordiau has maintained an active live presence — and has done so in innovative ways. He is known for organizing “lying concerts”, an immersive concert format that invites audiences to lie down and experience his music in a more bodily, meditative way.  This approach reflects his belief in music as something to be physically experienced, not merely heard.

His live work has also extended into grand-scale audiovisual territory. In February 2026, he performed at the Brussels Planetarium in a 360° audiovisual immersive performance,  combining his electronic soundscapes with the dome environment of a planetarium for a truly cosmic concert experience.

Sound Design and Commissioned Work

Beyond his artistic releases, Stordiau is also an independent composer and sound designer who takes on a variety of assignments.  His commissions have ranged widely — including, memorably, being approached to compose music for a young woman’s participation in a horse dressage competition.  This openness to unconventional briefs speaks to both his versatility and his genuine curiosity about the many contexts in which music can function.

Artistic Philosophy

What runs through all of Stordiau’s work — from his classical violin studies to his layered ambient electronics, from his lying-down concerts to his planetarium performances — is a commitment to music as an interior experience. His compositions do not announce themselves loudly. They invite the listener in, wrap around them, and take them somewhere else.

During composing, Stordiau has said he is very often astonished that music itself sometimes forces him to go in one direction or another — as if the laws of the universe take over.  It is this posture of receptivity — the composer as a conduit rather than a controller — that gives The Stordiau Revolution its singular quality: music that feels discovered rather than manufactured, emotionally authentic rather than artificially assembled.
