Bio

The Roshko Brothers, deeply rooted in classical music, blend tradition with modernity. Raised in Suwałki's wild nature and Slavic melancholy, their violin and cello resonate with history and emotion. Yet, they also embrace electronic elements, fusing the old-world charm with a contemporary twist, creating a unique sonic experience that bridges eras.

Roshko Brothers are a musical fraternal duo deeply rooted in classical traditions. Their music seamlessly merges tradition with modernity, crafting a unique sonic experience. Growing up in Suwałki, surrounded by wild nature and Slavic melancholy, Jan and Adam Roszkowski, known as Roshko Brothers, channel these inspirations into their compositions. Their pieces are composed forms, where a subtle dialogue between electronics and the enchantment of the cello is evident. Experimentation is an integral part of the musical language they create, with symphonic sounds constructing a cinematic space, at times echoing the post-glacial landscapes of Suwałki region.

Music, photography, and art have been companions to the brothers since childhood. Having studied abroad – Jan in New York City's Manhattan focusing on cello, and Adam at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels – they both busked on the streets of major cities, earning their livelihood. Yet, what guided and motivated them was a strong desire for solo careers. "We went through the whole process of perfecting intonation and playing techniques on the violin and cello, scales, passages, Bach, Mozart, Wieniawski, Schumann, Shostakovich. We performed as soloists many times, playing this repertoire with Polish orchestras. Only after years of studying in renowned schools did we decide that the path of composition, original music, freedom in improvisation, the world of experimentation, and layering of musical elements was more important to us," explains Adam.

Officially formed in 2009 during phone conversations between New York and Brussels, the duo made their debut on the Greenpoint scene during Jan's graduation ceremony in Manhattan. The turning point came in 2018 with their first album, „Karol Lipiński String Trios opp. 8 7 12,” which earned a nomination at ICMA 2018. The pandemic confined the brothers to Warsaw, preventing them from traveling and performing concerts, so they decided to launch themselves into the cosmos. In the winter of 2020, a groundbreaking piece was created – a fusion of Handel's music with the world of electronics (Cosmic Odyssey). Imagination and dreams were shared through a YouTube video. In the ricochet of 2020, in the closed world of culture, they also launched a festival in Suwałki region – Wigrosfera.

Beyond composing and playing their own music, Roshko Brothers have diverse interests. Jan is involved in professional audio-video production and editing, having also composed music for the feature film "Defekt Serca" directed by Bogdan Kozula. Adam tours with Seal, Susan Vega, and Earth Wind and Fire. Meanwhile, Roshko Brothers perform chamber string trios by Karol Lipiński in Europe, create arrangements for well-known songs on IOS devices, film, and fly drones, ultimately producing their own videos under the hashtag #RoshkoHitTheRoad.
