Désespoir des singes is a nickname for araucaria trees, but it is also the new indie-folk project of Brussels-based artist Jérôme Paque. Beneath this deceptively French name lies a project sung in English and inspired by folk greats such as Kings of Convenience and Nick Drake, but also by artists such as Radiohead and Tamino.

The tree is a true symbol of the project: dreamy and light at first glance, but if you listen carefully, darker and sharper than it seems. A duality found in the first single "Shadows" - broadcast on Classic 21 and BX1 radios - that came out both in studio version and in a live session.

Désespoir des singes opened for Bai Kamara Jr. for his first concert in February 2024. In 2026, Naya (bass-keys-backing vocals) and Manu Coenen (drums) joined the band - from solo to trio.

Achter de poëtische naam Désespoir des singes schuilt het nieuwe indie-folkproject van de Brusselse artiest Jérôme Paque. Hoewel de naam Frans klinkt, zingt hij in het Engels en laat hij zich inspireren door artiesten als Kings of Convenience, Nick Drake, Radiohead en Tamino.

De muziek klinkt op het eerste gehoor dromerig en licht, maar wie beter luistert ontdekt ook een donkere, scherpere onderlaag. Die spanning vormt de kern van het project en komt mooi naar voren in de eerste single Shadows, die al te horen was op Classic 21 en BX1.

Na een eerste concert in 2024 als support voor Bai Kamara Jr. groeide Désespoir des singes in 2025 uit van soloproject tot trio, met Naya en Manu Coenen. In februari 2026 verschijnt de eerste EP Distant Fire.
