Bio
Callaz is the artistic moniker of Maria Soromenho. Being a self-taught artist, she gives her own language the background noise of her autonomy, resulting in two EPs, two LPs and various Singles composed and produced in multiple points in Europe and the US. She has taken the stage in as many cities as the ones that are part of her affective geography and the history of each of her works.
Her self-titled debut LP (Callaz, 2020), produced in Lisbon by Adriano Cintra (CSS), collects ten tracks in a captivating and imaginative fusion of electronic pop and indie rock. In her second LP, Dead Flowers & Cat Piss (2021), produced by Helena Fagundes, she groups ten tracks that reveal the desire to experiment, not only with rhythm and melody, but also with new formulas for her creative process.
Produced by the artist Ah! Kosmos, Queima Essa Ideia (2020), Living in a Garage (2021) and Galaazar (2022) are the titles of the Singles she composed during her time in Berlin as a prelude of her intentions to take on new ideas on her live performance. No Lying, Biting (2022) was also produced in Berlin by RUSNAM.
Callaz's process in writing and composing Am-dram (2022) carries the artist's own experiences during the summer of 2022 spent in Antwerp. With a music video directed by Guilherme Valente, Am-dram is an electronic composition, lo-fi and intense as the title suggests: "Amateur Dramatic".
In 2023 Callaz released the track 16:16 produced by usof and collaborated with Moss Kissing. The same year sees the start of On se revoit quand? a monthly show at Radio Vacarme in Brussels.
Callaz has played live in Lisbon, Los Angeles, Malmö, Reykjavík, Berlin, Madrid, Brussels and toured New York City performing in venues such as The Bowery Electric and Rockwood Music Hall.
