AYATARU is the musical universe that grew around and beyond drummer and producer Thijs van Scharen, which continues to be shaped through the synergy of Shoko Igarashi, Alexis Boone and Sander Huys, and the worlds they each bring. Through warm and welcoming soundscapes, AYATARU builds detailed sonic worlds or ‘filmic trips’. Rather than operating within a fixed style or genre, AYATARU is defined by a shared approach centered around curiosity, continual exchange and improvisation. Drawing from different beat-based musics, IDM, jazz and other cosmic sounds — AYATARU’s textured compositions form the basis for live sets in which structure and spontaneity coexist — intentionally leaving openings in their arrangements in which moments of improvisation can emerge. The result is a thoughtful interplay between form and freedom: playful but never arbitrary.
