22tracks moves on

DVKES

DVKES is a Ghent-Antwerp based band that consists of members of Meuris, Stavroz, Helsinki and Psycho 44. In the past year the band recorded a debut album which will be released in November. Expect heavy sounding but catchy tunes that combine steady grooves with dazzling melodies.

Archont

Archont combines the complexe rhythm structures and darkness of heavyweights like Tool with the danceable grooves and coolness of Belgian electro kings Soulwax. Their songs prove real musicianship and an enormous amount of energy.

Hoar

Hoar started as a contemporary sounding producer's project but slowly evolved into a group effort, combining beats, guitars, vocals, loops and samples. Ecclectic track Venice of The North shows atmospheric triphop, slowed down R&B, heavy dubstep and 80’s shoegaze. Think Massive Attack, Oscar & The Wolf and Portishead.

Homelands

Homelands is the Ghent-based band of singer Ellen Trienpont. The six-piece combines rootsy poprock with the characteristic and powerful vocals of Trienpont. While that voice shows comparisons with strong personalities like Lady Linn and Dani Klein, the well-considered instrumental framework reminds us of Steely Dan.

Memo Pimiento Electric Orchestra

Mexican-born musician Memo Pimiento lives in Belgium since 2012. Together with his Belgian girlfriend/MC Manon Amen he started the Electric Orchestra for which they combine the best of both worlds. Their mix of warm Mexican Cumbra-rhythms and cold Belgian/European electronics (think of Front242 and Kraftwerk) sound like vital pieces of unique music.

Lee Williamson

Lee Williamson is a global traveller. Being born in Melrose Scotland, he got raised in South African Cape Town. Nowadays he lives in Antwerp. After years of writing small lyrical puns and sometimes even autobiographical poetry he now drops his rhymes in Belgian hiphop/rap scene. Tip: don’t forget to check out his collab with Woodie Smalls!

Danser

Danser is the alter ego of the Antwerp-based musician Alexander Serneels (who’s also guitarist for indie rock band Humble Flirt). One thing is clear when listening to his brilliant, first track ‘Implore (Explore)’: as a bedroom producer he’s a big fan of Chet Faker. Just like his Australian example, his music consists of layered vocals, a laid-back vibe, some house samples and great pop hooks.

Crying Boys Cafe

Anyone who’s a fan of the music of Elbow will instantly fall in love with Crying Boys Cafe. This four-piece creates indie tunes that are melancholic and danceable, often at the same time. As you can hear on ‘The Road’, these four musicians know a thing or two about how to write a song, and what’s more, the warm voice of singer Jasper Hupkens even remind us of Guy Garvey at times.

Be Irving

Balancing between folk and electronics, Be Irving. is a spanking new pop band. Combining acoustic instruments with laptops and samplers, and adding beautiful vocals on top, this three-piece has found itself a nice and fresh sound. It’s hard to find comparisons, but there are definitely similarities to acts like the xx, Beach House, Sparklehorse or the now defunct Belgian band Rumplestitchkin. Lovely stuff.

Crying Boys Cafe

Crying Boys Cafe was initiated by singer Jasper Hupkens and is now a rhythm-breathing four-piece band, driven by despair as much as by dancing.

Fake Indians

Ah, the glorious sound of a feedbacking guitar! Fake Indians is a four-piece from Antwerp, and they describe theirselves as “noise rock slackers”. The rock music they come up with contains elements from psychedelia, shoegaze, dub and kraut. It’s a heavy guitar sound reminiscent of bands like Sonic Youth, Pissed Jeans and Young Widows. Great discovery!

Alpha Whale

It’s a well-known fact that it’s impossible to surf on the North Sea. The sea region did, however, inspire, some surf-infused music. And the band producing it, is called Alpha Whale. These four guys are originally from Ostend, but currently living in Ghent, and beside the coastal influence, their music seems to be composed of garage rock and psychedelics. Great stuff for those who love The Black Angels and Double Veterans.

All We Expected

There’s nothing like a touch of doom to help us get over yes another grey Tuesday in July. All We Expected is our mos recent discovery, and they are a hard-hitting unit from Izegem and Lendelede. Just four guys, but if you listen to ‘We’re Not Born To Live Like Brutes’, you might as well expect an army. Somewhere along the lines of Russian Circles, Pelican, Red Sparrowes or an instrumental version of Isis. Great production, great song, great trip.

Dolores

The Antwerp-based six-piece Dolores creates upbeat tunes with a darker edge. At the core is the warm voice of singer Steffie Defossé, and her entourage consists of five strong musicians who accompany her with a blend of catchy pop, electronics, and even a bit of jazz. As one can judge on first single ‘Unconditional’, Dolores works as a whole. Be sure to also check out the video they made for the song, as they clearly put a lot of effort in!

Marta Rosa

Warm. If you’d ask us to describe the music of Marta Rosa in one word, that’s the one we’d choose. With a beautiful voice and a nice, jazzy sound, this band, that was built around singer Marta del Grandi, enchanted us from first listen. We hear echoes from acts like Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae, Esperanza Spalding, and a bit of CocoRosie. Addictive stuff!

Nostoc

If Tarantino or the people from HBO had already discovered Nostoc’s music, they’d surely given it a place in one of their features. Perfectly suited for a dark and haunting film, Nostoc creates a heavy and rootsy blues sound, but with a nice, contemporary production. Apparently, the band was already around a couple of decades ago, winning Limbomania in 1997, but it was just recently that the two brothers who make up the band’s core, decided to start again as an exciting two-piece.

Soviet Grass

Power! It’s what Soviet Grass is all about. With their fine blend of dirty blues and some excursions to stoner rock and psychedelia, these four guys from Bruges have constructed a sound that reminds of The Black Keys, The Dead Weather, Band Of Skulls and BRMC. Add to that mix some solid musicianship, a powerful voice and a great production, and you know we’ve got a winner. Is it original? Hell no. But with songs that’ll knock you off your feet, who cares? Those who love their music rocking, will have a blast listening to Soviet Grass.

Josly Meso

Just nineteen years old and bursting with talent. Josly Meso is a young rapper and musician from the town of Liedekerke. Writing the music and the lyrics alone, just like his song suggests, he’s perfectly capable of doing things on his own. ‘Better Off Alone’ is a laid-back hip hop track that reminds both of the old-school days of Jurassic Five, as of more recent artists like Drake. Josly Meso: remember the name.

Tamino

With a dark and deep crooner voice as his main asset and a guitar in his hands, the nineteen-year-old Tamino-Amir Moharam Fouad managed to win us over within the first minute of ‘Cigar’. His singing brings to mind Balthazar or Radiohead, while musically, we’re reminded of great songwriters like Elliott Smith, Songs: Ohia, Villagers, or Alex G. One thing’s for sure: this young man knows how to write a song, and is an artist to watch out for in the future!

Willem Ardui

The name Willem Ardui might not ring a bell, but as a jazz musician (Henry W. Baker Combo) and a hip hop producer (Blackwave), he’s been quite active lately. With this track under his own name, he combines samples by Jon Hopkins and Bill Withers, creating an atmospheric and hugely melancholic song. The words Ardui puts on top, are a poetic love story, and his delivery drifts somewhere between spoken-word and singing. Absolutely beautiful stuff, reminiscent of Spinvis, Eefje De Visser or Bazart.

Maurad and Maven

Maurad and Maven is a proper discovery! Hailing from Ghent, it’s the project by multi-instrumentalist Arnaud Vandamme, a man with “an unconditional love for tape, worn-out tubes, analog synths with LFOs, and coffee”. The music he creates is a fine blend of slacker rock, indie and psychedelia, reminding of Real Estate, the earlier work of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Mac DeMarco, Connan Mockasin and Dead Man Ray.

Anysa

Anysa - full name: Anysa Grammenoudis - is a singer-songwriter from Brussels who says she’s heavily influenced by the city she grew up in. Either way, she writes summery, acoustic guitar tunes, with quirky, humorous lyrics on top. Stuff for fans of Kate Nash, Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran but with the smooth soulful flow of Selah Sue or Amy Winehouse. Just listen to the alternative love song 'Tourist' and try not to smile when listening to what she has to say.

Krankland

Blending trippy, psychedelic music with a more straightforward indie sound, ‘In The Realms Of The Unreal’ by Krankland is one hell of a way to make an appearance on the Belgian music scene. This project by singer-guitarist Thomas Werbrouck is meant to be a tribute to his musical heroes, ranging from songwriters like Nick Cave and Tom Waits to experimental artists like Jonny Greenwood and Dirty Three. All great references, but we think Krankland mainly sounds like Krankland – which is definitely worthwhile to check out!

Doylu

Doylu first caught our attention by participating in Humo’s Rock Rally – amidst the seemingly endless stream of indie pop, this band played desert blues. At its base, you have the singer Pathé Thiam, who was born in Senegal. He introduced his bandmates to the music of his native country, and together they now blend it with more western rock and pop, creating an interesting cross-pollination of cultures.

KRANKLAND

KRANKLAND is de band van Thomas Werbrouck (Little Trouble Kids): klankexperiment reist hand in hand met intieme, breekbare songmaterie!

CJ Calvin

CJ Calvin is a singer, musician and producer, who operates from Ghent and has Cameroonian blood flowing through his veins. He channels his passion for music in tracks that find the balance between catchy pop and contemporary hip hop, ending up with productions that would fit perfectly on an album by Drake, Kanye West, The Weekend or Usher.

Appamada

“Jazzy popsicles with floating hints of lime.” That’s how the four-headed band Appamada describes itself. An accurate description, if you ask us, as their music seems perfect for the warm summer days that are coming our way. Just listen to ‘Crumbling Hive’ on which Appamada makes a lovely blend of folk and indie pop, reminding a bit of Kings Of Convenience, Feist or the softer stuff by Sharon Van Etten.

The Father, The Son And The Holy Simon

In the plan of the Almighty, He created a Father, a Son and a Holy Simon. Their divine mission was to crack the hardest nut in the only way it could be cracked: as a loud power trio, where roots and fingerpointing fast-forward rock & roll is mixed with ooze and poison. The Father, The Son And The Holy Simon are the ultimate proof that trinities aren’t only biblical. I mean, come on, nothing in this world rocks more than a decent power trio!

Camp Rebecca

Camp Rebecca consists of three musicians who put down nineties guitar bands like Faith No More and Soundgarden as their main influences. With a contemporary approach, they end up with a sonically fresh result. Take for instance ‘Keeping What We Got’, a rocking track that builds on a grooving bass and a thumbing drum, and has rhythmic guitar licks and a powerful vocal on top. Impossible to sit still to!

Lous

Lous, sometimes referred to as Lous And The Yakuza, is a jong, extremely talented singer with roots in Rwanda and the Congo. Now, she’s completely at home in Brussels and Louvain. It’s at the latter that she was recently made artist in residence of music club Het Depot. On the four EPs she’s already released, Lous displays her beautiful, warm voice and her longing for sonic experimentations. The results balance between classic pop along the lines of Lianne La Havas or Laura Mvula, and electronic acts like FKA Twigs and Kelela. But more than anything else, Lous is a talent in her own right, on an interesting, musical journey.

Frøwst

According to the dictionary, to frowst is an old verb, meaning “to lounge about in a warm, stuffy atmosphere”. As the music by this five-piece wraps you in a warm blanket of sound, we can surely understand why they chose this band name. Referencing both synth pop and post rock, their sound is very recognizable and very new at the same time. It kind of makes us think of Oscar And The Wolf, or if Talk Talk was formed in the 21st century. Frøwst is a unique one, for sure.

Mahler

Little can be said about Mahler, for they’re a really new band and – judging from their Facebook page and vi.be profile – they don’t like sharing too much information. What we do know, however, is that this band contains Domien, Ruben, Michiel and Giel, and that together, they create “trip pop, dream pop & psychedelic indie pop”. But if the music’s as good as the track ‘Sheria’, you can call it whatever you want, as far as we’re concerned.

Nature Heaten

With a groovy blend of soul, funk and hip hop, Nature Heaten manages to get you dancing for sure. This young band from Dilbeek has been working hard for the last couple of years, which makes these seven musicians a well-oiled machine with a maturity beyond their years. Sound-wise, one could compare them to Leela James, Jill Scott, Fugees and Lauryn Hill. It earned them a first place during the Kunstbende contest in 2015 and a residency at Vaartkapoen Brussels. Without a doubt, Nature Heaten is a band to watch!

Hausklopp.

One guy from Ghent, some old tape, worn-out valves, sequencers, computers and coffee: it’s all that’s needed to create the music of Hausklopp. Arnaud Vandamme started his project out of an unconditional love for melodious analog synths and low frequency oscillators. The result is a very danceable blend of electronic and analog music that reminds of artists like Simian Mobile Disco, early Daft Punk, Daniel Avery, and James Holden.

Jefferson ’n Chillow

West-Flemish rap, it’s a thing, for sure. We don’t know if it’s something in the water over there, but the region seems to excel in producing groovy beats combined with intelligent or just plain funny lyrics. A recent discovery for us, was Jefferson ’n Chillow: this collective from Kortrijk creates a unique touch by adding some (neo)soul and funk to the genre. In the West-Flemish-sung ‘Eurocent’, the band is supported by Walter Ego and the legendary Flip Kowlier.

Het nieuwe jaar is al eventjes ingezet – hoog tijd om ons 22tracks-kanaal opnieuw te voeden met nieuwe nummers. Bij het parelvissen doorheen de inzendingen ontdekten we volgende interessante artiesten:

Hals Und Beinbruch

Hals Und Beinbruch is an Antwerp-based duo with a quite unpronounceable name, that focuses on moody electronics with a cinematic feel to it. They describe their music as an avalanche of reverb, arpeggios and “kraut framed in 4:3”, and their sound reminds us of acts like Kraftwerk, Boards of Canada, Fuck Buttons, Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre. Quality stuff that goes straight for your weak spot. Dem feels!

RHEA

Some music is best enjoyed when played straightforward and unscrupulously. That is most definitely the case with RHEA, a new and lovely rock and stoner band. These five young musicians from Ghent seem to have found the right blend of groovy riffs and dirty licks, topped off with great vocals and strong musicianship in general. RHEA reminded us of Arctic Monkeys, Queens Of The Stone Age and The Strokes. Not the most innovative band in the world, perhaps, but who cares when the music’s so much fun?

Bonzo

Bonzo is a young lo-fi pop band from Linter. These guys play dreamy songs with a DIY attitude and a straight to the point recording approach. For people who like their songs raw but poppy, in the spirit of bands like Mac DeMarco, Ariel Pink or R. Stevie Moore.

Voor de laatste 22tracks van 2015 selecteerden we weer drie toppertjes:

Le Manou

Le Manou is the alter ego of singer Manou Maerten, a 20-year-old singer and music production student from West Flanders, who resides in the French-speaking, Ardennes city of Durbuy. She describes the project as a “dreamy quest to combine lyrical classical music and electronic vibes”. Her atmospheric first track ‘Elle’ proves that she’s capable of doing just that. And if you know that Maerten also collaborates with acts like AKS and Crossbeat, it’s clear that this is an artist to look out for in the future!

Whispering Sons

Whispering Sons brings genres you don’t hear that often amongst young Belgian bands, namely new wave, shoegaze and postpunk. The music this five-piece from the Limburg region produces, sounds ice cold and minimalistic, and the dark, deep and almost male-like voice of singer Fenne Kippers provides a unique finishing touch. Reminding both of acts like New Order or The Jesus And Mary Chain, and Iceage or Rape Blossoms, Whispering Sons manages to bridge the gap between past and the present.

Poolside Echo

Poolside Echo is the new brainchild of Xavier De Clercq, who’s singer in the also brilliant Bear Run. This project however, strikes a new path, in search of “dark yet exotic adventures”. It’s beautifully layered synth pop with strong vocals on top, that reminded us of The Juan MacLean, Holy Ghost and Miami Horror. In January 2016 Poolside Echo will be releasing its debut single ‘We Will Grow’, but this demo already got us really excited. His timing might be a bit off though, ’cause this clearly is music perfectly suited for summer, not winter …

Le Manou

Whispering Sons

Poolside Echo

Updatetijd! Deze keer zwierden we drie lekker wegrockende bands in onze 22tracks.

Delta Crash

Delta Crash delivers the kind of indie pop and rock we like: a solid base of groove by a classic bass and drum combo, and on top of that some beautiful harmonies provided by guitars and vocals. Not the most original sound, perhaps, but if it results in catchy, quality songs like ‘Fetch The Echoes’, then who’s complaining? No-one, apparently, seeing that this four-piece from Wetteren won third place during the Oost.Best! contest last week.

Abudhabi VZW

The common denominator for Abudhabi VZW, a collective consisting of several musicians who threw their sounds together in one band, seems to be guitar music. Wether it’s classic rock, blues, grunge or indie, the band takes the genre and owns it. The result sounds like the best indie rock from the nineties, with whims of The Sheila Divine, Buffalo Tom, Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies getting through. Quality music with a real song at its core, which recently earned them first place in the Rockvonk contest.

BLÆGGER

Just two guys, and yet: So. Much. Noise. That’s BLÆGGER for ya. As far as the name’s concerned, we’ve no idea what the hell it means, and we’re not sure they know theirselves. Besides, judging from their Facebook page, we don’t think they take things too serious. Except for the music, that is. In that regard, BLÆGGER is a force to be reckoned with, blending sludgy riffs and math rock licks with powering drums – a formula once perfected by Melvins.

BLÆGGER

Ugly sangs for groovy people.

Delta Crash

Noodles as arms, gelatine legs, limbs on the run

Abudhabi VZW

Alweer drie nieuwe nummers die prijken op 22tracks, bam! Deze keer is het tijd voor een deuntje dat ons de zomer doet missen en twee nummers die dan weer de melancholie van de herfst volledig omarmen.

Cleo

Cleo consists of four guys hailing from Bruges and its surrounding areas. With their young ages averaging around 21 years old, and already such a mature sound of singer-songwriter music and melancholic pop, it’s safe to say these talents have a bright future ahead. Coincidentally, they participated in the finals of the Westtalent contest past weekend (with their singer ending up the winner as a solo artist). Fans of Tom McRae, Ryan Adams, Damien Rice, The Frames and Turin Brakes, be sure to check ’em out.

kolektiv

There’s not much information to be shared about kolektiv, except that the band is made up of three musicians from the area around Liedekerke, and that this band was a very nice find for us indeed. With a thumping bass guitar and urgent vocals driving the whole and some solid musicianship all around, the threesome manages to create a massive sound. It sounds like a mix of post-rock, math and progressive metal that’ll make any fan of bands like Tool, A Perfect Circle, Cult Of Luna, Baroness or ISIS very happy.

Skinny Dynamite

When listening to the music of Skinny Dynamite, one thing becomes painfully clear: we miss summertime, goddamnit! With temperatures getting colder, we could’ve chosen a better time to discover this band. Fortunately, that’s about the only negative about this six-piece from Antwerp. They create a groovy and catchy blend of indie and disco, a bit like The Whitest Boy Alive and Connan Mockasin getting in bed with Nile Rogers and the rest of Chic. They call it SpacePop Rock ’n Roll, we call it difficult to sit still to!

kolektiv

Skinny Dynamite

Cleo

Met indie, electronica en funky hiphop is de cream of the crop die we deze week uit vi.be plukken en op 22tracks pleuren zoals steeds weer lekker divers. Ontdek ze hieronder!

The Herfsts

The Herfsts is a seven-headed indie monster from Leuven. With a selection during De Nieuwe Lichting 2014 and a string of shows in China in 2013, the band’s been around for a while, slightly changing their sound through the years. It finally seems that they’ve found what they were looking for: melancholic indie tunes with catchy vocals and playful interaction between guitars and keys. It’s safe to say it was worth the wait!

Morgan Abend

Morgan Abend is a young producer who’s riding the recent waves of glitchy electronics, trap and hiphop. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that this 16-year-old lists Rustie, Mount Kimbie and Hudson Mohawke among his influences, along with artists like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, and jazz music. Despite his age, Morgan Abend – real name Wannes Cuypers – already manages to find his own style and voice, delivering quality tracks like ‘Colour’.

Morphine Milkshake

Guitars meet hiphop? If you’re instantly cringing because of flashbacks to the good old nu-metal days of Limb Bizkit and Crazy Town, have no fear! Morphine Milkshake is a whole different beast. The band merges groovy funk, energetic guitar parts, hiphop vocals and a very absurd image (something about “5 genetically manipulated simian superbabies were destined to prevent the destruction of their planet”, anyone?). Judging from first song ‘Inside Of You’, the result sounds like something Mike Patton could’ve concocted.

The Herfsts

Feest en melancholie, een streep gitaargeram en een snuif elektronicagepingel.

Een rockband en twee popartiesten voeren deze keer onze vi.be-selectie op 22tracks aan. Read all about ’em hieronder, en beluister uiteraard de bijhorende muziek!

Grand Blue Heron

Hitch was a post-hardcore band that achieved somewhat of a cult status in Europe during the first decade of 2000. Unfortunately, the band split up in 2011. Out of the ashes however, two bands emerged to fill the void. One is SUPERGENIUS, the other is Grand Blue Heron. The latter creates noisy and atmospheric rock, influenced by bands like Motorpsycho, Sonic Youth, The Jesus Lizard and Barkmarket. Great stuff!

FÄR

As she describes herself, FÄR is “a 20 year old girl with a sparkling silver guitar”. And you can apparently add keys to her skill set as well. The aforementioned “girl” goes by the name of An-Sofie De Meyer, a 20-year-old from Ghent who’s also involved in other acts like I Will, I Swear and Sloth Prince. Accordingly, her own music is a blend of atmospheric pop and folk, reminding us of Cat Power, Feist, Jessica Lea Mayfield and Torres.

Magnolia

When the Ghent-based songwriter and singer Annelies Emmerechts found four musicians to interpret her songs, Magnolia is what they ended up with: a fine blend between trip-hop and neo-soul, with some added electronics. It made us think of the early works of Hooverphonic, and of acts like Morcheeba and Tosca, which is never a bad thing.

Er vallen alweer drie nieuwe plaatjes te vinden op het 22tracks-kanaal van Poppunt. Deze keer viel ons deskundig oog op drie artiesten die weten hoe je een nummer schrijft. Omschrijvingen hieronder!

Piquet

Piquet is yet another new and promising band that chooses its mother tongue as its means of expression. With success! Piquet first emerged during the 2013 Limbomania contest and has since been refining its sounds and songs, with a soon-to-be-released debut EP and a busy touring schedule as a result. The foursome creates indierock with some eclectic influences like pop, psychedelics and noise. The main attributes are solid musicianship and of course the versatile vocals of singer Lien Moris. Take for example ‘Parkiet’, a lovely and absurd track about the parakeet petting the dog.

Fodiator

The things we learn while selecting these 22tracks! Apparently, a “fodiator” is a genius of the flying fish family. Next to that, it’s also a project started by songwriter Joris van Ooij in his attic. He’s an self-taught musician who creates his songs alone and then performs them with his Dutch-Belgian band. Van Ooij likes to create an atmospheric and melancholic blend of indie, pop and folk, that reminds us of what makes acts like Efterklang, Menomena and Guillemots so great. Great stuff for the winter that is coming.

Coyote Melon

Coyote Melon brings a fun mix: at its core, this is purebred pop music, but at the right times, this four-piece from Ghent releases some fun rock riffs to switch things up. That way, the music always retains a refreshing edge and never gets corny. Other qualities include the bands strong sense of melodies and its vocal harmonies. The quality songs they produce recently got the band selected for the Oost.Best! contest; it’ll be exciting to see how far they get!

De selectie pareltjes viel deze keer op een veelbelovend producersproject, een getalenteerde hiphopartieste, en een vette stonerband met proginvloeden. Beluister ze op nu op 22tracks!

GLINTS

GLINTS is the brainchild of Jan Maarschalk Lemmens, an Antwerp-based musician and producer with a British background. The music he creates is a fine blend of hip hop, electronic music, and pop. Very soon, Lemons will drop his first EP via the Run Tell Secrecy label, which was recorded with Vuurwerk’s Jergan Callebaut, along with guitarist Mathias Bervoets. First single ‘Dread’ reminds us of The Streets, Ghostpoet, Chet Faker, and yes, inevitably Vuurwerk.

Majestic Sun

Time to rock out! Majestic Sun is an instrumental band from Ghent that describes its sound as “progressive stoner rock”. When listening to ‘Plague or Cholera (Part I)’, we hear bursts of acts like Sleepy Sun, Kyuss and Tool. In other words, a description that fits the bill. And more importantly, rock music that pleases our ears all day long.

Gloria Boateng

Gloria Boateng is a 25-year-old Ghanaian-Belgian rapper and singer, who grew up in the vibrant Ghent. By combining a mix of hip hop, pop, funk and soul, she reminds us of artists like Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Neneh Cherry, and Nneka. With her live band, she recently was awarded the third place at the De Beloften contest. And if you’ve seen her live shows, you understand why: this is a woman who’s born to be on stage, performing.

Luftwaffe Locomotive

As you might know by know, we at Poppunt love ourselves some noise rock. Flavour of the month is Luftwaffe Locomotive, a nihilistic three-piece from Hasselt. The song ‘Made In Taiwan’, with lyrics like “I’m made in Japan” and “I’m made out of plastic”, very quickly makes clear what kind of band this is. It’s the stuff fans of acts like Shellac and Kapitan Korsakov will appreciate.

Team Marmalade

After the label mates Fatty K, Baz, Don Luca, Roncha, JEF and Wits from Marmalade Productions went on a weekend together, the idea was born to make music together. The result is a first label compilation called ‘Bosbessen Marmalade’, consisting of 14 strong tracks of Dutch-spoken hip hop. As can be heard on the track ‘Ach Ja’, the laid-back, bass-heavy beats go perfectly together with the smart stories these MCs have to tell.

The Insect Soldiers Of The Sky

The Insect Soldiers Of The Sky is four-piece from Limburg that creates catchy indie rock. Consisting of two brothers and two other members, they received some acclaim at the last edition of HUMO’s Rock Rally for their coherent sound. Earlier in 2015 the band released their first EP at the Muziekodroom in Hasselt, filled with strong songs and absurd lyrics about ‘Beetle Robots’ and ‘Drones and Giraffes’.
