Old Salt is een internationale Americana band met Gentse thuisbasis.. De bandleden uit de VS, België, Zweden, Frankrijk en Schotland, hebben van bij het begin de stijl en sound beïnvloed, ieder vanuit zijn of haar muzikale achtergrond. Sinds 2015 legde de groep een opvallend parcours af met concerten in België op onder meer Dranouter Festival en de Stadsschouwburg Brugge, in Zweden op het Urkult Festival en in de VS in het Guthrie Center, Great Barrington MA. Old Salt werd de winnaar van de “European World of Bluegrass” award 2017. In 2018 maakte de groep zijn debuut in Engeland, Oostenrijk, Duitsland en Noord-Ierland.

Old Salt haalt zijn invloeden uit de straten van New Orleans, de Appalachia Mountains, de folk revival in het noordoosten van de VS en vermengt deze met de vele klanken en tradities uit het oude Europa. Of het nu gaat om een street performance of een groot podium: Old Salt staat garant voor een Amerikaans-Europese folk sound met pit, dynamiek en spontaniteit.

In mei 2019 stelde de groep zijn nieuwe album 'Commons' voor aan het publiek, de opvolger voor ‘Up River Overseas’ uit 2016. Deze keer werkten ze nauw samen met producer Leander Meuris (Young Partners in Art) in GAM Studio (Waimes), het album werd gemixt in Nashville USA door Sean Sullivan (The Devil Makes Three, Del McCoury Band, …). Uit de songs spreekt een grote maatschappelijke betrokkenheid en de sterke wil om te verbinden over imaginaire en reële grenzen heen. Met frisse, verrassende arrangementen én respect voor traditie bewijst Old Salt alvast dat het kan.

De leden van de band ontmoetten elkaar in de zomer van 2013, toen Dan Wall - toen een schrijnwerker en straatmuzikant uit Upstate New York - zijn weg vond naar een wereldmuziek conferentie in Slovenië. Tijdens deze intensieve veertiendaagse werkte hij samen met verschillende getalenteerde en inspirerende muzikanten van overal ter wereld, waaronder Johannes Wannyn, Lotte Remmen, Anton Teljebäck en Dave Barfoot. Hier ontpopte hij zich tot bandleider en speelde zijn eerste festival show. Niet lang na hun eerste avonturen in Slovenië, ontmoetten ze elkaar weer in februari 2014 toen ze werden uitgenodigd op het festival Umefolk te Umeå, Zweden. Op dit festival kreeg de band de smaak echt te pakken en al gauw belandden ze in hun huidige thuishaven, Gent, waar ook de huidige bassiste Lara Rosseel zich bij de groep aansloot. Na maanden street performance en kleinere podia, kreeg de groep uiteindelijk vaste vorm bij de opnames van hun eerste album ‘Up River Overseas’ in Noord-Zweden 2015, tijdens een tournee door Europa. Dit album werd uitgebracht begin 2016. In 2017 sloot ook de Franse cellist Toby Kuhn zich bij de band aan. Sinds 2017 treedt de band op als kwartet en als septet. Vanaf 2021 speelt de band nog uitsluitend als kwartet. Het kerntrio rond Dan, Johannes en Lotte wordt daarbij aangevuld met cellist Toby Kuhn of contrabassist Tomás Peralta.

Old Salt is an Americana band based out of Ghent, Belgium, performing original and traditional music since 2015. The international members have individually influenced Old Salt with their heritage sounds from the USA, Belgium, Sweden, France and Scotland. Ever since, they’ve run a remarkable course with gigs in Belgium at Dranouter Festival and at the Gentse Feesten, in Sweden at Urkult Festival and in USA in the Guthrie Center in Great Barrington MA, just to name a few. Old Salt received the “European World of Bluegrass” award for 2017. In 2018, the band made his debut in the UK, Ireland, Austria and Germany.

Old Salt pulls it’s influences from the streets of New Orleans up through Appalachia to the folk revival of the North Eastern States and jumps the pond to the many sounds from old Europe where the band currently resides. They successfully mix the session with stage and street to bring a folk sound with grit, dynamic, spontaneity and tight arrangements. Old Salt’s first album “Upriver Overseas” was recorded in Sweden in 2016. In may 2019 the band released their second album where they worked closely together with producer and sound engineer Leander Meuris (Young Partners in Art) in GAM Studio (The Ardennes Belgium). The album is mixed in Nashville, USA by Sean Sullivan (The Devil Makes Three, Del McCoury Band, …) and combines original songs by Dan Wall and Johannes Wannyn as well as traditional tunes arranged by the band.

The band met back In the summer of 2013 when Dan Wall, a then carpenter and street musician from New York, found his way to a world music conference in the Istria region of Slovenia. During this two week period he met and collaborated with many talented and inspiring musicians from around the globe some of whom backed him up on his first festival show. These musicians (Anton Teljebäck, Dave Barfoot, Lotte Remmen, Johannes Wannyn) are now fast friends. Not long after their adventures in Slovenia, they were able to rendezvous in February 2014 when invited to a music festival in Umeå, Sweden. This road wound down to Ghent Belgium, where bass player Lara Rosseel joined the group and where the band is based today. In 2017 the band was completed with the entrance of French cellist Toby Kuhn and performed as a quartet or a septet. Since the pandemic in 2020, Old Salt performs exclusively as a quartet featuring the core trio with Dan, Johannes and Lotte, supported by Toby on cello or Tomás Peralta on double bass. Between street performing, numerous festival stages and folk venues the momentum has naturally grown to bring them to the fore as a band that pushes the limits of folk music.
