Bio

Award-winning MARS DUO is an innovative and masterful marimba duo formed by two marimbists - Fiona Foo Pui-yee and Humphrey Leung Wai-leuk. Internationally acclaimed as the pioneers of using 8-mallet gripping technique, they are the first duo group in the world to introduce 16 mallets in the performance for the audiences.

The members of MARS are both active as performers and educators by giving concerts, seminars, workshops, and amazed their audiences by their unique and splendid style of playing with a wide range of genres. With a creative vision of combining theatrical elements, dance and improvisation; from classical to folkloric to contemporary with their own compositions and arrangements, musical/show tunes to electronic, western to Asian music. Mars is exploring the possibility of the marimba duo and shows its huge performing variety to the public audience.

They had internationally performing experience across Asia, Europe, and North America, including Austria, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Macao, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States. They were invited to perform concerti with different well-known orchestras, such as Russia Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal College of Music Philharmonic Orchestra, London and Macau University Orchestra etc.

Humphrey and Fiona are both marimbists born in Hong Kong. They are currently based in England and Belgium and have obtained master's degrees in marimba performance at Royal College of Music, London and LUCA School of Arts, Lemmensinstituut, Belgium. The Yamaha Europe Music Foundation Award, the Soirée d’Or Award, London and Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund Overseas Postgraduate Study Scholarship, Hong Kong have supported their musical study and career. They have won various marimba competitions, including the 1st Prize and Premio Speciale “Paolo Serrao Prize” in European Music Competition in Italy, 1st Prize and top grand prize “Best Competitor Masterplayers Prize” in Masterplayers International Music Competition in Switzerland; Igor Lesnik Prize in Universal Marimba Competition in Belgium; The RCM Concerto Competition in London. Their first collaboration can be traced back to 2008.
