Bio

"Complex rhythms, organic synthesizers, warm guitars and a celestial voice: these are the ingredients of Léonard Steyaert’s music that collide into an enchanting electronic whirlpool. As a classically trained musician and modular synthesizer developer, Steyaert pours his sound experiments into intimate songs. Sometimes threatening, sometimes explosive, yet ever-alluring. Léonard Steyaert currently works as a programmer/developer for Shakmat Modular and is a resident artist at Volta Brussels."

  • Influences vary from modern classical composer Olivier Messiaen songwriters Thom Yorke, Björk, David Sylvian, Portishead and the Beatles; to experimental electronic artists such as Actress and Warp/Hyperdub artists.
  • His current live set includes 8 songs which he performs solo (voice, analogue synths, electronics, guitar), and sometimes with live visual artist Thomas Johannes (on interactive video feedback).

Bio:

  • Formed as a classical pianist during his youth, Léonard Steyaert rapidly developed a strong interest in experimental and innovative applications of technology in artistic contexts. In parallel with his electronics/Information-Technology engineering studies at the University of Brussels (VUB/ULB) he worked as a composer and modular synthesiser performer with choreographer Louise Everaerts de Velp.
  • With an exchange year focusing on acoustical engineering at the Technical University of Denmark, a master thesis about signal processing methods for audiovisual performances, a year of Live Electronics (Music) at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (KCB) and a year of History of Art at the ULB, Léonard Steyaert‘s path shows a broad curiosity in diverse sectors, although all connected by his interests in art , music and technology.
  • Today, Léonard composes/produces/performs his music under his own name and works as an engineer and embedded programmer of modular synthesisers for Shakmat Modular.
