Isle of the Sky

It has been labelled in many ways – is it classic pop, post-rock, female ethereal pop or jazz? Isle of the Sky is simply Ilse Wanten. Using her own voice, loops, samples and soundscapes, Ilse works with various musicians, or not. In the past, Wim de Busser (King Dick, Stef Kamil Carlens, etc.), Jorg Strecker (Papermouth, InKata, etc.), Dimitri Brusselmans (Boenox) and Jozef Blersh (De Snode Vormgevers) have all collaborated with her. Why I live in Antwerp, on the other hand, was a solo project (rewarded with a grant of the City of Antwerp). Whatever Ilse decides, the result can always be considered a soundtrack to her written work. In addition to songs and music, Ilse also writes books and articles that tell stories about her personal, cosmic experiences and offer an optimistic, hopeful perspective on this world in transition. The latter is also the guiding principle of cellist Katelijn Van Kerckhoven, with whom Ilse is currently exploring new horizons. (The two met while playing in the experimental classical quartet Boenox.)

"Isle Of The Sky, could be simply as it is, but according to leadsinger Ilse Wanten it should be pronounced as I love the sky. It typifies the band that tends to put you on the wrong track each and every time. The confusion created about it being pop, postrock,female ethereal pop or just jazz? A question with no conclusive answer to it, also making this Antwerp band so wildly daring and on the other hand also simply fitting the description of wondrously beautiful. The music made by Ilse, just like her books, is based on visions and memories of previous lives leading her naturally(organically) towards a more artistic(arty) direction unfolding into Isle Of The Sky. Her minimal approach is reminiscent of a Lynchian version of Tristan. Up till now a more hidden pearl but nothing keeping you from digging it up and saving it as a talisman." "Ilse previously collaborated musically with Wim de Busser and Michele Morgante from King Dick, Jorg Strecker from InKata, and Chloe Joos from Fungus. However, for Why I Live In Antwerp, she wanted to do it on her own. Why I Live In Antwerp is difficult to compare with Isle Of The Sky's previous songs, because it is more of an adventurous, experimental trip. Various soundscapes alternate with a kind of spoken word performance. We hear singing bowls, applauding audiences and street noise. Occasionally there are also dark streaks of music, in which we can hear more distinct songs. In any case, we listened with fascination from beginning to end to this intense recording. Het kreeg reeds vele labels opgeplakt: Is het nu klassieke pop, postrock, female ethereal pop of gewoon jazz? Isle of the Sky, dat is echter 'gewoon' Ilse Wanten. Uitgaande van haar eigen stem, loops, samples en soundscapes, werkt Ilse met verschillende muzikanten, of niet. Zo deden in het verleden reeds Wim de Busser (King Dick, Stef Kamil Carlens, ect.), Jorg Strecker (Papermouth, InKata, ect.), Dimitri Brusselmans (Boenox) en Jozef Blersh (De Snode Vormgevers) met haar mee. Why I live in Antwerp (een conceptueel muziek-project, gesubsidieerd door de Stad Antwerpen) was dan weer een solo-project. Wat Ilse echter ook beslist: het resultaat kan altijd worden beschouwd als een soundtrack bij haar geschreven werk. Ilse schrijft naast liedjes en muziek namelijk ook boeken en artikels die verhalen over haar persoonlijke, kosmische ervaringen en een optimistisch, hoopvol perspectief bieden aan deze wereld in transitie. Dat laatste is ook de leidraad van celliste Katelijn Van Kerckhoven waarmee Ilse momenteel nieuwe horizonten opzoekt. Beiden leerden elkaar kennen bij het experimenteel klassieke kwartet Boenox.

"Isle Of The Sky, het zou eenvoudiger kunnen, maar volgens frontvrouw Ilse Wanten toch uit te spreken als I Love The Sky. Het typeert de band die geneigd is om je iedere keer op een ander been te zetten. Verwarring scheppen, want is het nu pop, postrock, female ethereal pop of gewoon jazz? Een vraag zonder sluitend antwoord wat waarschijnlijk net het avontuurlijke aan deze Antwerpse band is, en anderzijds eenvoudigweg met het adjectief “wondermooi” te omschrijven. De muziek van Ilse is net als haar boeken gebaseerd op visioenen, herinneringen aan vorige levens, die haar op natuurlijke wijze naar een artistieke richting hebben geduwd en zich hebben ontplooid in Isle of the Sky. Haar minimale aanpak doet bij momenten wat denken aan een Lynchiaanse versie van Tristan. Tot nu toe een beetje een verborgen parel, niets weerhoudt je ervan om hem op te graven en als talisman te gebruiken." (Review Luminous Dash - 6 juni 2018)

"Ilse bracht haar muziek in het verleden samen met Wim de Busser en Michele Morgante van King Dick, Jorg Strecker van InKata en Chloe Joos van Fungus. Maar voor Why I Live In Antwerp wilde ze het toch in haar eentje doen. Why I Live In Antwerp kunnen we moeilijk vergelijken met de songs van Isle Of The Sky uit het verleden, omdat dit meer een avontuurlijke, experimentele trip is. Er komen diverse soundscapes voorbij die worden afgewisseld met een soort spoken word performance. We horen klankschalen, applaudisserend publiek en straatlawaai. Af en toe zijn er ook donkere streepjes muziek, waar we dan toch meer afzonderlijke nummers in horen. In elk geval hebben we van begin tot eind geboeid geluisterd naar deze intense registratie. Wanten zorgt voor genoeg afwisseling opdat we constant verwonderd worden door wat we allemaal voorgeschoteld krijgen." (Review Luminous Dash - 1 december 2020)
